The Racial Harassment Action Group Monitoring Project (RHAG MP), a subgroup of the Leicester Partnership Against Crime and Disorder, aims to improve support for victims of racial harassment, whilst taking action against perpetrators with the long term goal of reducing incidence of these crimes within society.
The
project is involved in the following work:
Monitoring:
establishing a common monitoring system with agencies across the city to
ensure that incidents are reported and recorded in a consistent manner.
Support:
providing support to victims of racist incidents by referring them to appropriate
agencies.
Marketing: raising
awareness of the services available and encouraging victims to report racist
incidents.
Preventative
Work: promoting,
supporting and developing strategies aimed at preventing such incidents.
Advice: Leicester
Racial Equality Council (LREC) will provide support, advice and guidance
to individuals who experience racial harassment and discrimination.
Our
current activities:
Continuing
to engage and provide support to organisations.
The Racial Harassment Action Group Monitoring Project team has been
operational since January 2003. The project has managed to engage 24 organisations
who are now part of the common monitoring process. Consequently, the project
has developed a common monitoring data-base which is now in place. We have
been producing quarterly reports and making periodical analyses of the
data.
Developing
a city-wide poster campaign
with targeted areas such as late-night take-aways, taxi drivers and refugees
and asylum seekers. In order to encourage people to report racist incidents
in Leicester, the project is involved in a poster campaign aimed particularly
at late night takeaways and taxi drivers, who have been identified as prime
targets for racial abuse. Following consultations with these groups, the
project is now in the process of producing stickers for taxis and takeaways,
and generic posters, which will be launched in December 2003. A second
round of the poster campaign, to be completed in January 2004, will be
aimed at encouraging refugees to report racist incidents.
Developing
and assisting in delivering a toolkit aimed
atyouth and community
centres which will address racial harassment. The project is also
developing a toolkit to assist youth workers to recognise and deal with
racist incidents with confidence. At present consultation is being undertaken
to inform the contents of the toolkit, which will be available by March
2004.
Establishing
a programme of training for school staff and governors The
project is offering school staff and governors training on investigating
and recording racist incidents within schools as well as support material
such as leaflets.
